Robert Lewandowski admits he considered a move to Manchester United and even spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson.
Lewandowski was 23 at the time and in only his second season in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund.
He had bagged thirty goals already that year when he got a phone call.
It was Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United.
In an interview with the Guardian, the Polish international admits the mere fact it was Ferguson and United he was interested.
While he was strongly considering it. But as quickly as the opportunity came about it was taken away as Dortmund flat out said no.
“I was speaking with him [Ferguson].”
“After two years at Dortmund and at that time I was really thinking about a move to Manchester United.”
“Because of Ferguson and because of Manchester United.”
“Borussia Dortmund said: ‘No, that’s that.’”
“That was the first time I was thinking about the move.”
“If you get a phone call from Sir Alex Ferguson, for a young player it was something amazing.”
“That was a special day for me.”
Maybe Dortmund should have listened to the United offer.
Two years later they lost Lewandowski on a free transfer to rivals Bayern Munich.
