Robert Lewandowski hailed former teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger as someone who embodies all the best qualities of a “great athlete and man”

The 34-year-old spent 17 years at Bayern Munich after joining at the mere age of 13.

Schweinsteiger left in 2015 for Manchester United and has recently been played for Chicago Fire in the MLS.

But he returned to Munich on Tuesday night to play in his testimonial match, which saw him feature for both Bayern and Chicago in each half.

Schweinsteiger scored Bayern’s final goal in a 4-0 win.

And Lewandowski, who won the Bundesliga title with Schweinsteiger in their sole season together during the 2014/15 campaign, took to Instagram afterwards to pay tribute to his friend.

“Basti! When you left Munich I said it was an honour to compete and then share the changing room with you.

“When a certain stage in your life will end you will be able to look with pride at all your years in a professional football.

“You are a great example and the embodiment of all the best qualities for a great athlete and man. Enjoy every moment on the pitch. All the best!”
