Lionel Messi gives Barcelona a new La Liga title vs Levante

With a second-half goal from the Argentine, FC Barcelona defeated Levante and became La Liga champions for the second consecutive year.

FC Barcelona needed to only win this Saturday’s match against Levante at Camp Nou in order to win La Liga title today.

Atletico Madrid could’ve given the trophy to the Catalan club before playing but the Colchoneros won the two matches they had to play before today’s match at Camp Nou.

This left manager Ernesto Valverde with the obligation of winning the game against Levante and depending on themselves to win La Liga before the end of the season.

The Blaugrana obviously preferred to win the competition today in order to focus further on what they can do against Liverpool in the Champions League next week.

Getting to lift the trophy today meant that the gaffer could rest as many of his best players as he wanted for the return leg at Anfield Road next week.

Regardless of how important this match was, the manager decided to leave Lionel Messi on the bench for the start of this game and leave the responsibility to other offensive players in the squad.

The Argentine was going to be important for this match either way, mainly because the players who took his place didn’t deliver during the first half.

Luis Suarez simply doesn’t connect with Dembele or Coutinho in the same way he does with his pal Messi.

There were actually many important moments for the Brazilian playmaker during the first half, but his shots weren’t accurate.

The French winger keeps struggling to find his best form and he even seems a little nervous playing alongside the rest of his teammates.

Some of his moments on the ball were as if he was scared of getting injured again, Ousmane Dembele is not well.

This massive disconnect from the players up front opened the chance for Lionel Messi to come on during the second half, Valverde called him for the full second half.

FC Barcelona wanted to win this trophy tonight, whatever it took.

The first half gave us a goalless draw and a Camp Nou crowd that was beginning to get nervous, they knew that La Liga trophy was at the stadium.

President Luis Rubiales made the decision to bring the title tonight because he was confident on Barcelona winning the competition in front of their crowd.

Eden Hazard, Real Madrid

Kaka hopes Eden Hazard can start a rivalry with Lionel Messi

Former Real Madrid star Kaka is keeping his fingers crossed that Eden Hazard can replace Cristiano Ronaldo as Lionel Messi's new rival.

But Levante fought until the very last minute and they really made it difficult for Barcelona to win this match, Messi was needed to confirm this trophy.

The Argentine came in from the very start of the second half, it didn’t take him long to make his presence sounded.

The key moment of the match

It took Lionel Messi only 15 minutes to get what everybody wanted from him, which was to score the winning goal tonight.

Getting to be the player who gives La Liga title to his club is something that could only fit Messi this season given how important he’s been for the club throughout the year.

The moment came after a ball was rejected by the Levante defense inside the box, Arturo Vidal took the ball and assisted Messi with his head.

The Argentine didn’t flinch when he decided to take his shot, he dribbled two players with a single movement and buried the ball in the bottom corner.

This goal would be enough to get that desired trophy, Levante was close to getting the equalizer but the post and Ter Stegen saved the Catalan club.

It was almost as if destiny wanted Barcelona to win La Liga tonight, they need all the time they can get in order to compete in the Champions League.

Lionel Messi could lift his first major trophy as the club’s captain and all the players celebrated with the fans at Camp Nou for several minutes.

They can celebrate all they want tonight, but they have to go back to work tomorrow ahead of Liverpool’s visit on Wednesday.
