Time to discuss the only time that Lionel Messi has visited Old Trafford during his career, the Argentine hasn’t won there and will return on Wednesday.
There is no question that one of the most exciting quarterfinal matches in the Champions League this week will be Barcelone visiting Manchester United at Old Trafford, the stadium that Lionel Messi has only visited once during his career and left him a very bitter memory of the event.
This happened exactly one season before FC Barcelona started its incredible dynasty that has lasted for a full decade, it was the same season in which Manchester United won their last Champions League trophy and they did it by eliminating Leo Messi’s FC Barcelona.
During that series, the Red Devils beat the Blaugrana with a spectacular solo goal scored by Paul Scholes at Old Trafford.
Messi wasn’t himself during that season, the Argentine was suffering from muscular injuries and he wasn’t able to play at his full potential and he will obviously have more than one reason to play at his best against the Red Devils.
We all know the type of welcoming party that the Manchester United supporters have ready for when he comes, but they also won’t hesitate to cheer him if he plays a memorable game as Ronaldo Nazario did with Real Madrid back in the day.

Despite Messi hasn’t won at Old Trafford yet, the Argentine does have a good record against English squads in Champions League history, Out of the 29 matches that Messi has played against English sides, Leo has already scored 22 goals.
Just this season he came to Wembley to deliver another one of his master classes against Tottenham Hotspur with two goals scored against Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but Messi’s travels to English soil started all the way back in the 2005-06 season when he visited Stamford Bridge when he was only a teenager.
The Argentine played against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea and the Blues were only able to stop him through violence, a very nasty challenge by Asier del Horno nearly sent Leo to the hospital but he was able to recover properly from the reckless tackle.
The club that has suffered Leo the most has been Arsenal, he has scored a total of 9 goals in only 6 matches he’s played against the Gunners and they have all been memorable nights for the Argentine against the other London squad.
The only English club that has managed to resist Messi is Liverpool, the Argentine hasn’t been able to score goals against them when he faced the Reds.
Moving on to Manchester we have City, the Citizens have received a total of 6 goals in 6 matches played by Lionel Messi and he has always been ruthless against them.
But there is no question that the most hurt club of all is Manchester United, the Red Devils are always seeking revenge against Lionel Messi because the Argentine has scored his most important goals against them in the Champions League.
The first time Messi met the Red Devils after his first visit to Old Trafford was one season later in the 2008-09 final, Messi scored the second goal in Rome and left Cristiano Ronaldo’s squad empty-handed.
The second time Messi met Manchester United was in the 2010-11 season at Wembley, the Red Devils didn’t have the Portuguese player this time and Messi scored another goal against them in the final 3-1 victory for the Catalan club.
This last time he scored against them was the second direct confrontation during a final between Pep Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson, Messi was the standout performer in both matches.
Everybody is already dreading next Wednesday on the red side of Manchester, the blue side is hoping that Leo can have another magical night and eliminate their hated neighbors.
