Atletico Madrid knocked the title holders out of the Champions League with an impressive turn-around 3-2 win at Anfield Road this evening.
Europe will have new champions this season, as Atletico Madrid won their Round of 16 tie against Liverpool with an aggregate score of 4-2.
The Colchoneros traveled to Anfield with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and barely survived the regular 90 minutes in which Jan Oblak registered 10 saves to keep Liverpool only to Wijnaldum’s goal from the end of the first half.
With all-square on aggregate, the game went into extra-time and Roberto Firmino thought he finally broke the visitors when he put the Reds in front in the 94th minute.
However, substitution Marcos Llorente had other plans. The former Real Madrid youngster scored to give Atletico an away-goal advantage only three minutes later and added another one in the dying moments of the first extra-time period.
He also provided the assist for another substitute, Alvaro Morata who set the final score, as Liverpool suffered their first defeat at Anfield in 43 games across all competitions.
