Liverpool have been warned that they are at risk of being without star forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane for their season opener by Lauren.
Salah and Mane were a vital part of the Liverpool squad that ended last season with Champions League glory in Madrid. They also shared the Premier League Golden Boot award on 22 goals to help the club to a second-place finish in the standings.
Now, the strike duo will be back in action for the Africa Cup of Nations. Salah will be representing hosts Egypt, who will kick things off against Zimbabwe in their Group A opener tonight in Cairo. While Mane will have to serve a suspension first before he can show up for Senegal.
The Liverpool stars will likely play key roles again for their respective nations as they chase AFCON glory. Egypt, who are the competition’s most successful team, finished runners-up in 2017, and Senegal reached the quarter-finals.
Therefore, it’s fair to expect that both Egypt and Senegal will go far into this summer’s AFCON with the final in Cairo set for July 19.
On the downside, however, this will almost certainly rule out Salah and Mane for Liverpool’s Community Shield clash with Manchester City on August 4 along with their opening Premier League fixtures.
“Whatever happens, Liverpool will need to start the season without Salah and Mane as they will need a good couple of weeks to rest and recuperate, otherwise their level will drop during the season,” Lauren told bwin.
“Players will be mentally and physically exhausted and will need a few weeks to recuperate before heading into the new Premier League season.”
The ex-Arsenal and Cameroon full-back added: “If they don’t get the rest, there will be a chance that their Premier League campaign will be impacted by a slow start as the players are just too tired to play.
“This could be trouble for Liverpool as both Salah and Mane will likely be involved in the latter stages of the Africa Cup of Nations.”
