Liverpool will play in the FIFA Club World Cup and the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup, all within a 24 hour period.
The club had tried to rearrange the Carabao Cup fixture with the English Football League.
This was apparently not possible.
Therefore according to manager Jurgen Klopp, the club will put together two teams.
One will travel to Qatar for the prestigious world championship of club football.
The other will play in the equally important of not less glamorous league cup back in England.
The move is unheard of and bold by the Anfield club. Manchester United withdrew from the FA Cup back in 2000 when faced with a similar problem.
The clubs official website liverpoolfc.com released a statement outlining their plans.
The statement read:
“Liverpool Football Club can confirm our Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Aston Villa will take place on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.”
“As a result, we will be utilizing two playing squads simultaneously.”
“One squad participating in the FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar and another in the Carabao Cup.
However, they felt that this solution was more beneficial to the integrity of the club and the competition.
