John Barnes doesn’t believe Thiago Alcantara would make a great fit for Premier League champions Liverpool.

Thiago is keen to leave Bayern Munich this summer and could be on the verge of a surprise switch to Liverpool. Talks are allegedly at an advanced stage. The only thing holding the deal back is Bayern’s asking price of €35m.

The former Barcelona midfielder has tasted Bundesliga glory in all of his six seasons in Germany and was every bit as impressive this term. A groin injury, however, sidelined him for seven of the club’s final eight games.

Despite his impressive resume, however, Barnes isn’t sure Thiago would fit into Jurgen Klopp’s system. He even suggested Thiago’s arrival could weaken the defense.

“With the midfield being very workmanlike, they are a lot of points better off than everybody else,” the former Reds winger told BBC.

“The reason you can have two full-backs attacking at the same time and three strikers is because they have three hard-working midfielders to protect that situation.

“If you get another creative midfielder and you want your full-backs and front three to attack, then maybe you are going to concede more goals.

“Manchester City have got how many creative players in their midfield? But Liverpool finished 20-odd points ahead of them.

“Maybe Man City should say: ‘Let’s get more hard-working players in midfield so we can catch Liverpool.'”

Although recent reports have claimed that Paris Saint-Germain have tabled an offer for Thiago.
