With a double by Sadio Mane and one more goal for Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool FC delivered a dominant Champions League performance at Bayern Munich.

The other great Champions League night was happening at Allianz Arena in Munich, the match between Bayern and Liverpool was the most leveled of all the series without question.

We were going to live quite the exciting night in Germany, a draw with goals would be enough for Jurgen Klopp’s side to get that next-round ticket and Bayern needed to win the match if the Reds scored a single goal.

This meant that Klopp was going to prepare this game to eliminate the Bavarian squad, a club against which he lost the Champions League final in the 2012-13 season when he coached Borussia Dortmund.

Getting to send Bayern home would be sweet revenge for the boss, his players really wanted to respond during a very difficult time in which the Reds have already lost the Premier League’s top position and they were still thinking about winning a trophy with this manager.

The first half was exciting for both sides, but Liverpool were the ones who drew first blood through a beautiful individual effort by Sadio Mane after a clinical assist by Virgil van Dijk all the way from his own side of the pitch.

The Senegal international made a beautiful turn around that left Manuel Neuer dizzy, he finished with a precise effort above the defenders.

Bayern knew that they were below Liverpool’s level, but this didn’t stop the Bavarian squad and they could find the equalizer after Matip failed to clear a long cross from the right flank.

The defender scored an own goal and left Liverpool scared for their Champions League future.

But all those doubts cleared quickly during the second half, as defender Virgil van Dijk proved that he is one of the best defenders in the world again after scoring the second goal for Liverpool with a potent header.

This result pushed Bayern Munich to score two more goals with 20 minutes left on the clock, we could say that the series was practically decided for the English club but they still wanted to make one final effort.

Bayern Munich seemed to lose their hopes to get those two goals after Van Dijk’s decisive header during the second half, this was a German squad that never really got ahead of the Reds in their own stadium.

It was only normal that Niko Kovac’s squad felt that they lost their chances to score more goals, but Liverpool still wanted to leave an even greater impression in all of Bayern Munich’s fans this evening.

With seven minutes still left on the clock, the German giants got the killing blow after Mohamed Salah sent a clinical cross to Sadio Mane from the left flank and the Senegal international scored Liverpool’s third goal with a header.

This result made Bayern Munich score three goals to win the match, but that wasn’t going to be possible as Liverpool proved that they were the far better squad out of the two.

This result leaves all German clubs out of the Champions League’s quarterfinals since 2006, it also qualifies all four Premier League squads to the next round and proves that English football is back to the very top amongst the top leagues in European football.

The key players tonight were Sadio Mane with his two goals, and Virgil van Dijk with his dominant performance against the most competitive rival that we could think of.

Even the Premier League hopes for the Reds remain very much alive after this performance, Jurgen Klopp is well on his way to taking the Reds to compete for the two major competitions until the end of the season.

Next Friday’s draw will be very exciting for everyone, especially for the Reds.
