Barcelona legend Lobo Carrasco is against the idea of Neymar making a return, but did endorse Antoine Griezmann’s expected move.
Neymar is pushing hard for a Barcelona comeback this summer, with his father seen in Catalonia last weekend attempting to set things in motion for a transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.
Although it remains unclear whether the Blaugrana are willing to match the €222m they received from PSG when they sold Neymar in 2017. The Brazilian has since suffered a recurring set of long-term foot injuries and is currently recovering from an ankle problem.
Therefore, spending such a huge amount on the injury-prone star represents a risk for Barcelona. On the other hand, should Neymar return to his best and leave his problems in the past, it could be a welcome dose in quality for the club’s ageing frontline.
Both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are in the thirties, while the young forwards Ousmane Dembele and Malcom face uncertain futures at Camp Nou.
But Carrasco reckons signing Atletico Madrid’s star forward Griezmann should be enough for Barcelona.
“I do not want Neymar to come in,” the Spaniard told El Chiringuito.
“I want Griezmann, a centre-back, a left-back and a centre-forward to come in.
“That’s my road map and I would not change it, whether I’m [Josep Maria] Bartomeu, [Lionel] Messi, sports director or coach.”
Barcelona’s defensive problems, in particular, were exposed in their humiliating Champions League semi-final defeat to Liverpool.
Despite winning the first-leg at home 3-0, Ernesto Valverde’s side were thrashed 4-0 at Anfield in the return fixture to blow their hopes of a first European title since 2015.
So, Carrasco can’t see the logic in signing Neymar when the problems are quite clearly at the back.
“With the signing of Neymar, Barca would lose even more at the back,” he continued.
“They were swept in Europe, they [Liverpool] got us 4-0, 3-0.
“If we have a further breakdown in defence, are we going to go from four to six goals?”
Barcelona have made three signings in the summer transfer window in Ajax star Frenkie de Jong, Valencia goalkeeper Neto and right-back Emerson from Atletico Mineiro.
The Spanish league champions have spent a total of €113m, so far.
