Andy Lonergan has put Swiss attacker Xherdan Shaqiri in the same bracket as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino at Liverpool.
Alisson Becker’s injury forced Liverpool’s hand. The Reds would sign journeyman Andy Lonergan as a backup replacement behind Adrian.
Lonergan did not get time to represent Liverpool on the pitch but spent a lot of time between the sticks during training. The Preston native was full of praise of the gifted attackers.
However, the one player who impressed him the most was Xherdan Shaqiri.
The Switzerland international’s left foot scared the 36-year-old goalkeeper, whom he bequeathed the title, ‘little magician’.
“No-one’s surprised me because they’re all unreal,” Lonergan told The Liverpool Echo.
“The one I really don’t like facing is Shaqiri. When he’s shooting, he can do whatever he wants with that left foot.”
“I’m always thinking when we’re doing five-a-side, ‘Please be on my team,’ because if he’s against you, he’s a little magician with his finishing.”
Lonergan could not get enough of the shooting sessions, which highlighted the forwards’ proficiency.
He stated that it allowed him to show his mettle. However, Lonergan was often left red-faced as he was on the receiving end of a barrage of shots.
“Often they’re on a Thursday so there have been times with Alisson and Adrian in one goal, needing more rest with a game on Saturday, but me with a goal to myself so 30 minutes of constant shooting,” Lonergan added.
“I really looked forward to it, it’s a chance to show the lads what you can do. But sometimes when they’re on a hot streak, wow, you can’t get near them.”
