During an interview with Jorge Valdano, Luis Figo revealed the real reason behind his controversial transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid.

Luis Figo leaving FC Barcelona for Real Madrid is possibly considered one of the biggest betrayals in football history.

The Portuguese winger was living his best life at the Catalan club and he simply decided to leave the institution at the end of the decade.

His choice to play for the biggest historic rival hurt the institution in a deep manner that the supporters will never forget.

Luis Figo still can’t physically walk through the streets of Barcelona without getting heckled and he has learned to live with this burden ever since.

There have been many stories about his exit from the Catalan club over the years but Figo had never revealed a small detail about how the whole negotiation took place.

Turns out that the Portuguese player didn’t trust president Joan Gaspart with his future and a deal was struck without him even known about it.

Figo never trusted this president because he already had a terrible reputation and his promises seemed empty for the star at the time.

Luis came by Johan Cruyff’s specific request and he grew to become one of the best players in the world during his time at Barcelona.

Everything seemed to be perfectly fine before the whole drama took place and Figo seemed to be on his way to building a rich history with the club.

The player started looking at the many irregularities between the club’s board and his agent in regards to his future and he decided to take action by himself.

The man didn’t have a relationship with Florentino Perez when he was campaigning to become Real Madrid’s president the first time.

The promise that Los Blancos’ future chairman made to the fans virtually earned him the presidency, as he kept telling everybody he would sign a Ballon d’Or contender.

Everybody got thrown off by the secrecy behind all these promises and many even believed Florentino was talking about Zinedine Zidane.

But nobody ever imagined that Figo was the one who kept secret talks with Florentino, the Portuguese player alone won Perez the Real Madrid presidency.

But this decision ended up costing the winger all the respect from the Barcelona fans and life was never the same after taking this step.

Figo recently sat down with Jorge Valdano in a one-on-one interview to discuss his career and this topic came out.

The former player doesn’t regret his actions but he did want to clear the air about certain things that he considered necessary to share.

“I lived five wonderful years in Barcelona. Both on the human side as well as on the sports aspect of things,” said Figo via Diario AS.

“During that era (summer of 2000), the Barcelona presidency’s winning candidate was Joan Gaspart and I never trusted him one bit.”

“He can promise me the moon but he is a person who doesn’t transmit any trust to me at the time.”

“Things got more serious until the point where I get an offer from Italy and I reach an agreement with Real Madrid’s presidential candidate Florentino Perez.”

“There was another arrangement I allegedly had with Barcelona that I was never told about.”

“I was supposed to pay all the club’s partner’s yearly fee for a full year if I didn’t end up at Real Madrid.”

“But that agreement was signed by my agent and I had nothing to do with it. I signed nothing of the sorts.”

“When the offer came, the Barcelona board told me to bring them the money and they let me leave.”

“Both clubs coincidentally had elections that year as well. I didn’t know Florentino personally.”

“I was on vacation in Cerdeña and Florentino won the elections. Everybody involved in the deal flew to Cerdeña in order to convince me to sign for Real Madrid.”

“Upon our return to Lisbon, I met Florentino for hours until the early hours of the next day.”

“After that meeting, I called my wife to tell her I made the decision to sign a new contract for Real Madrid,” he concluded.
