Luka Modric marks the end of the Messi/Ronaldo era

We tell you why Luka Modric’s individual success has marked a very important moment in football history, the end of the Ronaldo/Messi era.

Even if Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi may still win a few individual awards during the twilight of their careers, we are convinced that the player who has brought the end of their era is Luka Modric. The Croatian midfielder is not only incredibly deserving of everything that is happening to him this year, he was also incredibly lucky that the two monsters of football were not as successful as he was on the collective level because there is no denying that both of them are still far better players than Modric will ever aspire to be. But the difference is that the Croatian midfielder had the better success with both his club and his country during the most important moments of the whole season, even if he failed to win the World Cup with Croatia, there was no doubt that Luke Modric was the best player of the whole tournament above any French player in the competition. The Real Madrid midfielder led Los Blancos to their third consecutive Champions League success, where he did shine more than Cristiano Ronaldo during the whole season.

Then on the football creation side of the equation, there was no other player better than Luka Modric at making his teammates better and thus helping them achieve the objectives of the season. Even though there is no one who will dare to say Luka Modric is a better player than any of the other two, there is no denying that the Croatian magician had the far better year and that is why he has already won the UEFA Award. This is also the reason why we believe that he. is the absolute front-runner to win the FIFA The Best award in a few days, given that Antoine Griezmann wasn’t able to get that nomination because the voters believed Mohamed Salah deserved it more. This absence of any French football player in the podium is what gives Modric the better odds to lift the trophy during the ceremony a couple of weeks from today. Cristiano Ronaldo might not want to attend this one either, because he is going to lose to his former Real Madrid teammate once again.

Cristiano Ronaldo named Serie A Player of the Season

Cristiano Ronaldo has capped a brilliant debut campaign at Juventus by winning the Serie A Player of the Season award.

Ballon d’Or, a new challenge for Modric.

This is another award ceremony in which Luka Modric has a certain advantage, but not as much as with the other awards because this Ballon d’Or is inherently French and the France National Team did win the World Cup this year after all. This particular award will also have three different nominees this year, but there is a bigger possibility that at least two French players from Les Bleus get a spot on the podium. However, there is no way that Luka Modric doesn’t get that third spot and this will be the final confirmation of the Ronaldo/Messi era finally coming to an end. None of the two best players in the last decade will get a single individual award other than the Golden Boot that Leo won last season fair and square, but Cristiano will end up completely empty-handed for the first time in over 10 years. This is history in the. making folks, this marks a shift on international football that could remain as a new norm from now on.

While it lasted, there is no question that the Ronaldo/Messi dominance was the best thing that could ever happen to football, we will even go on a limb here and say that this is right up there with the best rivalries in sports history. We have to put it up there with the Frazier/Ali rivalry, Schumacher/Vettel, Federer/Nadal, Johnson/Bird, and the list could go on and on. But we have to say that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, might be even more outstanding because both players are considered just as good compared to the other one, and the other mentioned rivalries in sport always had one that was slightly above the other. I’m tearing up just thinking about it because I know that we will never experience another thing like it and when it’s gone we are truly going to miss it. Too bad for the unfortunate souls who always wanted to compare these two instead of enjoying them, their reign is now over and we have Luka Modric to thank for that.
