Luke Shaw named Man United’s Player of the Year

Luke Shaw took home both the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year and Manchester United’s Players’ Player of the Year prize.

English full-back Shaw has made 40 appearances in all competitions for United this season, despite falling out of favour under former manager Jose Mourinho during the previous campaign.

The Portuguese seemingly lacked faith in the 23-year-old and openly questioned his fitness and commitment last year.

In light of his limited opportunities at Old Trafford, Shaw was left out of the England 2018 World Cup squad.

But the former Southampton defender has since bounced back strongly by working on his fitness and reclaiming his spot in the United line-up.

This turn around in fortunes even caused Mourinho to praise Shaw prior to his own dismissal in December.

Under new coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, however, Shaw has continued his strong form with supporters and his team-mates voting him as United’s best player ahead of even Paul Pogba.

“It’s obviously nice for me, but I’d rather win no [individual] trophies and have a better season as a team,” Shaw told MUTV.

“We need to move on and focus now on next season and what’s to come.

“Ole has done an amazing job and of course we’ve had ups and downs but he’s obviously looking forward to getting us back in pre-season and getting his proper work done for next season. We’re all looking forward to starting fresh next season with him as the manager.”

Demi Mitchell, Manchester United, Premier League

It’s been a long time: Demi Mitchell

Manchester United defender Demi Mitchell is back to training after his injury and he's aiming at returning to full fitness to be able to play.

Shaw also became the first Englishman since Wayne Rooney in 2010 to have claimed the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year prize.

He added: “It’s special to win the [Sir Matt Busby] award, especially as it comes from the fans.

“The fans have stuck by me through hard times and they’ve always believed in me and it’s nice to see that they still do now, voting for me to win the trophy.

“I’m proud to win both the awards tonight, but there’s much more to come from me personally. I really believe that.”

Shaw, who signed a new contract at United in October, will now turn his focus to Sunday’s season finale against Cardiff City at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
