The United Arab Emirates hero scored the only goal against Australia, to take his team into the 2019 AFC Asian Cup Semifinals.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) needed a lonely goal by Ali Mabkhout in the Quarterfinals to beat Australia and advance into the 2019 AFC Asian Cup Semifinals.
Mabkhout scored with 22 minutes remaining on the clock, beating defending champions Australia.
“I am so proud of myself in scoring nine goals at the Asian Cup, but I don’t care about personal awards,” Mabkhout said to The National.
“My objective in this tournament is to win the cup for my country.”
“I am always ready to serve my country. And when I score that’s luck from God. It’s always our aim to win and to take it match by match. It’s a system we’ve been using since the groups were finished,” he added.
“Our target is always to win, in any match.”
“We don’t care about our performance on the pitch, the result is more important for us. And after each match so far the level of performance is improving, and that’s significant,” he commented.
“We don’t care about the voices from outside that the performances are bad, the performances are bad. We just care about what we have to do on the pitch.”
The UAE will face Qatar in Tuesday’s Semifinal at Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
Meanwhile, Iran takes on Japan one day before at the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain.
