The Blues replaced Carlo Ancelotti with Gennaro Gattuso at the helm of Napoli but it is unlikely to bring an improvement in their fortunes.

Napoli are under performing. The San Paolo based outfit on a run of eight games without a win in Serie A. Carlo Ancelotti was ushered through the exit door with Gennaro Gattuso taking his place. But it looks unlikely Rino can change their destiny.

The problems with Napoli were not rooted in their manager inability. Ancelotti has won accolades across Europe and his tactical genius cannot be questioned.

He brought La Decima to Real Madrid, won domestic championships in France and England with Paris Saint Germain and Chelsea respectively. Ancelotti is a winner and there is no doubt about it.

At Napoli he was destined to do the same. But could not. He took over from Maurizio Sarri and continued the Blues impressive form in Serie A. His team finished second to perennial champions Juventus and fought until the end of the season.

While they secured participation to UEFA Champions League Round of 16, but in Italian top flight competition they floundered. They have failed to negotiate tough fixtures and it is here that the root of Partenopei’s problems have surfaced.

Napoli have an aging squad which has not been reinforced. The club’s unnerving trait of haggling over players has cost them but it is an area which has been pushed under the rug. Moreover, they have kept hold of players who wanted to leave for pastures new.

It is in the dressing room that Napoli have lost and the club’s decisions have not helped their cause. Allan’s issues were berated and players were castrated for speaking up.

Problems with Napoli

Training was not an issue but was made to be one. Players were made to feel life children and they retaliated in a similar manner. Support from the backroom has not been received and form over the pitch suffered.

To make matters worse, injuries to first team players has not helped their cause. Hirving Lozano has been on the stretcher as well, but the loss of Arkadiusz Milik has been more impactful. The Polish attacker has scored 9 in 10 games, and missed out most of Napoli’s games.

With Mertens turning 33, Fernando Llorente’s addition did not make sense. But he was added to the roster and has flattered to deceive.

The current season has been underwhelming for Napoli. But they have shown glimpses of excellence. Reigning European champions, Liverpool, were beaten at the San Paolo, and an impressive draw secured at the Anfield.

However, Gattuso is not an able replacement for Ancelotti. He is too defensive and Napoli did not want a coach in that mold. It was not in defense they had issues, it was converting chances that was a problem for the Partenopei.

These issues will not be resolved by a managerial change. Rino will have to change his attitude to change Napoli’s fortunes. And the Italian tactician is known for a lot of things but flexibility is not one of them.
