Manchester City demolishes Shakhtar with a Jesus hat-trick

Outstanding performances from Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez for Manchester City’s merciless 6-0 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The city of Manchester is currently having a massive celebration because both of their clubs proved that they will get to the Derby in top form, Pep Guardiola’s Citizens were as spectacular as always against Shakhtar at Etihad Stadium and there are some specific players we need to talk about.

First of all, we must start this review by mentioning the importance that Riyad Mahrez’s impact had in this match from the early minutes of the game.

The Algerian winger has proved that he is one of the most skilled dribblers that Pep Guardiola has, and also one of the best transfers of this summer’s transfer window.

We were all able to see that Mahrez has reached the same level that brought him to win the PFA Player of the Year Award for Leicester City, by only looking at the previous movement from Manchester City’s first goal in which he provided David Silva with a marvelous assist.

It was early in the first half, and the Citizens were already ahead on the scoresheet thanks to the Algerian player’s amazing moment of brilliance.

But this was only the start of an insane performance, where Mahrez led almost all of the attacks from Manchester City this evening.

Not too soon after Silva’s goal, the referee called a penalty that never existed after Raheem Sterling tripped on his own and was never touched by a Shakhtar defender.

Clearly, this led to more complaints about the absence of VAR but the opportunity wasn’t wasted as Gabriel Jesus could finally end his goal-drought via the spot.

This 2-0 result remained until the second half, Raheem Sterling wrote his name on the scoresheet after a potent strike that was mildly deviated by a Shakhtar defender and gave Manchester City an even greater advantage.

The Ukrainian club didn’t really have any chance of coming back after the third goal, it was only a matter of time before the local squad scored a few more and they did it in great fashion.

The ref called another penalty after a handball that Jesus transformed again for his brace, then Mahrez joined the party after Ilkay Gündogan assisted him during the final 10 minutes of the game.

But the Algerian winger still wasn’t happy with everything he had done until then, he wanted more protagonism and he got it near the end of the match.

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City

Guardiola: “Liverpool are strongest opponents I have faced”

Pep Guardiola declared Liverpool as the strongest foes he's ever encountered, with Manchester City already five points adrift in the title battle.

Mahrez set Gabriel Jesus with another assist for the sixth goal of the evening to Manchester City, the Brazilian netted his hat-trick and Riyad was able to end his spectacular performance with two assists and one goal.

This final result places the Citizens at the top of Group F with 9 points, it also grants them an eleventh consecutive match without getting beaten by any other squad in all competitions.

This scary form Pep Guardiola’s side has at the moment, means nothing for next weekend because they are going to play the Manchester Derby against Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils at Etihad Stadium.

While the Citizens do have the advantage due to their status as the locals, it’s clear that Manchester United have improved dramatically in the last couple of weeks and winning this match for Pep Guardiola’s boys won’t be easy at all.

We all hope you are ready for a unique experience, as we are all savoring next Sunday to arrive because we will surely be witness to one of the best matches of the season in the English Premier League so far: the Manchester Derby between City and United.
