Steve Nicol believes that the club’s most important signing this summer is going to be that of a sporting director.

Former Liverpool star, Steve Nicol says that the club’s most important deal this summer would be the hiring of a sporting director. The Englishman says that the club needs to have former players in key positions for the recruitment team to work effectively.

Manchester United have been linked with creating a sporting director role and have even held talks with a few candidates. However, the club hasn’t made an appointment so far. Steve Nicol says that after a shambolic display last season, the club needs to have someone who understands football.

Ed Woodward has been unable to get the best out of the club on a sporting level and Steve Nicol has hinted at the club’s CEO not being good enough for a sporting role. Clearly, Woodward’s experience makes him a great marketing person. However, when it comes to dealing with sporting matters, Woodward isn’t suited.

While speaking to ESPN FC as reported by Daily Star, Steve Nicol says that the club’s owners must make changes as soon as possible.

“[The Glazers] want to make money, right,” Nicol told ESPN FC.

Many comparisons were made between Marcus Rashford and a young Cristiano Ronaldo, who both impressed at Manchester United early on.

“You also want a good team.

“So you have to bring in people who know about football in order to get it right on the field.

“And then you bring in people to work on the money side, so you keep it apart.

“You don’t have the guy that’s good at getting money in but knows nothing about football making football decisions. It shouldn’t be that difficult.”

The likes of Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher have been considered as potential candidates for the sporting director position. And in all honesty, one has to agree with Steve Nicol when he says that the club should see the appointment of a sporting director as the club’s most important signing of the summer.
