Scott McTominay may just have shown how important he is to Manchester United, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was keen to thrust him immediately into the mix after his successful groin surgery.

New acquisition Cristiano Ronaldo continues to steal the limelight, but the Scot’s performance at the London Stadium demonstrated the Norwegian’s strong belief in him. According to Premier League news on Vwin, this might also have underlined the unanswered issue that has dogged his progress. Said Benrahma scored the game’s first goal after McTominay and Fred failed to close him down, but the Scotland international showed off his superb offensive flair with some lethal line-breaking passes and driving runs as the game progressed.

The problem is that the academy graduate is still having an identity crisis for United, as they need him to grow into a defensive maestro while he continues to play as an attacker.

Jesse Lingard proves doubters wrong

After a poor team performance in midweek, Jesse Lingard was picked up for criticism as the villain, but this time he was the hero courtesy of a moment of pure brilliance that secured all three points.

Before the Sunday clash, David Moyes revealed that Solskjaer had blocked any permanent move for the England international during the summer transfer window, making the manner of the goal all the more difficult to accept given the role they played in moulding him into the player he’s become with a loan move earlier this year.

Lingard’s whole United career has been built on proving his critics wrong, and his most recent crowning achievement was yet another perfect illustration of the superb professionalism that has earned him so many coaches’ trust.

After an outstanding calendar year, he may not have the primary position he desires, but he still has a vital job to play as a consistent contributor off the bench at United.

A new-found partnership

Although it may sound ridiculous today, several critics believed that Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo would be an unsuitable pairing for United this season, but they are proving to be the opposite.

Such is their qualification to fill the title, world-class players will always find a way to adjust to their circumstances, and Fernandes’ form over the last week further proves his pedigree as a player in the game.

Even though Fernandes is now more of a creator than a match-winner, there is certainly potential for both of them to be at their best for United, even if they haven’t always connected at international level.

He may miss being the team’s poster boy, but it’s a sacrifice worth paying given that United has another fantastic talent who is the final piece required to complete his collection of silverware.

Declan Rice’s role at United already curved

Declan Rice’s performance on Sunday afternoon was touted as an audition to show United what they’ve been missing, and it demonstrated exactly what he could provide them – as well as what he wouldn’t.

Rice, 22, will most likely be a big name in the summer transfer season since his current West Ham contract expires in 2024.

United supporters screamed out for a new defensive midfielder this summer, but it’s apparent that Rice isn’t the deep-lying anchor that many believe is required to improve this team and allow them to play in a 4-3-3 formation on a consistent basis.

Instead, the England international would be a step up from the likes of McTominay and Fred, implying that he would be better served in an axis rather than as a lone defensive midfielder.
