Manchester United players who embarrassed themselves at Southampton

Manchester United were in shocking form against Southampton and some of the players involved should be feeling embarrassed about how they played.

While Manchester United did make a great start to their four Premier League game of the season away to Southampton, the game ended with further questions about the team’s credentials. The Red Devils were simply horrendous after the break and never looked like a team that could add to their early lead which they got through Daniel James.

A lot of players were simply bad against the Saints. From Paul Pogba missing 15 yard passes to Victor Lindelof once again not being able to clear his lines, there were tons of problems with the team at Saint Mary’s.

Victor Lindelof

The main reason why Harry Maguire struggled against Southampton was because his defensive partner was clearly not up to the task. On the day when Chris Smalling’s loan move to AS Roma was confirmed, the Manchester United centre back once against missed a header that lead to the equalizer.

The Swede is a good defender but we don’t really where that person is at the moment. If such displays become routine, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have another crisis to deal with.

Andreas Pereira

Granted he’s still young, the Manchester United man is expected to perform responsibly in the position that he’s supposed to command. The young Brazilian was a mere spectator in the game and didn’t bring anything of note to the table as the Southampton players easily pass him by.

It appears that Solskjaer needs another player in this position but with the transfer window closed, he’ll have to wait till January.

Marcus Rashford

With Anthony Martial out injured, Manchester United only had the young Englishman to lead the line up front. Clearly this is not the position where he would thrive. Rashford is much more eager to play down the flanks.

However, regardless of what your preferred position is, a player as experienced as Rashford (despite his age) should be able to adapt to the needs of his manager. The striker isn’t really keen on playing up front and perhaps these issues could make fans eventually doubt the sanity behind selling Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan.

Paul Pogba

Now we do agree that Paul Pogba has a lot of responsibilities at Manchester United but the midfielder is expected to lead from the front. Bearing in mind that he is also expected to multi-task while playing for France, Pogba should at least get the basics right.

Throughout the game, there were issues with his passing that really rile up fans. For instance, a pass that was essentially a 15 yarder, was completely misplaced. For a player of his quality, Manchester United have every right to expect more out of him.

It wasn’t a great outing for the Frenchman and it is clear that Solskjaer needs someone more consistent in the middle of the park. One cannot expect Pogba to be the man who could drive Manchester United to better days so a change is needed.
