The Liverpool forward has missed two from the penalty spot in successive games for the Teranga Lions in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Sadio Mane might be one of the best Senegalese players in the world.
He just lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy with Liverpool.
And now he’s looking to lift the Africa Cup of Nations title with his national team.
But after failing to score from the penalty kick spot in two consecutive matches for the Teranga Lions, he has come out to say he will step down from this responsibility.
“It’s a momentary withdrawal,” Mane told the media according to Goal.
“I have missed penalties in both games and must admit that it is not a good ratio.”
He explained: “I do not want to penalize my team and, at least for the time being, I’m going to stand aside for the penalties and let other teammates get on with it.”
“When I return to my club, I will continue to work hard to improve on this aspect,” he concluded.
Senegal has advanced all the way to the Quarterfinal, as they take on underdogs Benin at the 30 June Stadium this Wednesday.
