Valencia boss Marcelino Garcia Toral lamented his side’s inability to convert their chances in the second half as they fell to a shock 2-1 Copa del Rey defeat to Sporting Gijon

Despite their struggles this season in La Liga, Valencia were considered favourites heading into the first leg of their last-16 tie at second division side Sporting Gijon.

Instead, it was the hosts who took control of the match with Javi Noblejas tapping in the opening goal following a brilliant piece of play by winger Andre Sousa.

Kevin Gameiro levelled for Los Che moments before the break following some VAR intervention.

But Nick Blackman then came off the bench in the second half to score an unexpected winner for Sporting Gijon to add even more pressure on Marcelino.

“We had the intention of winning and we didn’t manage to. The dressing room are really hurt, because the results aren’t coming,” said Marcelino on the club website.

Arsenal v Stade Rennais - UEFA Europa League Round of 16: Second Leg

We finally got the Europa League’s Quarterfinal squads

After a very busy Thursday in the UEFA Europa League, we finally got the tiers for this Friday's quarterfinal draw in the second most...

“We need to get out of this situation with character and courage. It’s a two-legged tie and I think we should have won this game.

“We had more chances on goal, and clearer chances; in the first minute we had the clearest chance that I’ve seen in six months.”

“The second half was poor. We had two really good chances to go ahead, and the opposition scored from a set piece.

“We need to analyse what happened, because its a repeat of previous situations. We’ve had a lot of chances over the past four months that we haven’t been able to put away.”

“In the second leg we will try to play, finish our chances and go through. Now we have to regroup and beat Valladolid. Nobody will ever see me throwing in the towel.”
