With a late winner from Marco Asensio, Real Madrid managed to get the victory against Ajax with a lot of suffering. Vinicius was important again.

Amsterdam Arena was the venue that saw Real Madrid visit Ajax in the Champions League’s Round of 16 on Wednesday, this was the first leg of an exciting playoff between two great football clubs.

Real Madrid was coming with great inertia in the last couple of months, they have completely recovered from a terrible start of the season right on time before coming back to their fetish competition.

Los Blancos were facing Ajax from Amsterdam, a club that is filled with young stars and is barely starting to make a name for itself in recent years but has one of the richest histories in world football.

The Dutch had midfielder Frenkie de Jong available for this match, the most recent Barcelona transfer fell injured last week but was available to prove himself against his future mortal enemy.

Matthijs de Ligt however, was Ajax’s captain this evening and became the youngest player in Champions League history to receive this honor tonight.

Los Blancos lined up their best possible starting XI with Benzema, Bale, and Vinicius up front to create chaos on Ajax’s defense.

But the Dutch squad wasn’t going to let the Spanish club win this match easily, they were going to make them suffer.

The first half was very controversial in Real Madrid’s favor, as Ajax scored a goal through Nicolas Tagliafico during a corner-kick that Thibaut Courtois messed up when he went out of his area to clear out of the box.

The Dutch squad scored but the referee was advised by VAR about interference on the goalkeeper that ref Damir Skomina decided to call as a foul for Los Blancos, this disallowed goal hurt Ajax pretty badly and they weren’t able to completely recover from the shock.

The first half ended with a 0-0 result but with Real Madrid completely convinced that they could get the result, they came back in filled with confidence and they soon found the openings they were expecting.

Algeria manager denounces Benzema: “I’m happy with my players”

Karim Benzema was denied French call-up once again which prompted him to look for other potential solutions in order to play internationally again.

Vinicius Junior once again became one of the squad’s most important players, he was the player who made the key play during a crucial moment of the match that gave Real Madrid the first goal of the evening.

The Brazilian made a fantastic escapade from the left flank after a long pass from the other side of the pitch, he saw Benzema with more space than him and assisted the Frenchman for a clinical finish.

There was a moment during the final 15 minutes of the match when Ajax seemed to get back in the game, deservingly so.

Neres was able to find midfielder Hakim Ziyech with the cross and the Dutch squad got the equalizer they were looking for in time, or at least that’s what they thought.

But this is Los Blancos’ favorite competition, they love getting the result in the most unexpected moments and they managed to do it once again thanks to a key goal scored by Marco Asensio.

The Spanish midfielder came in during the final 15 minutes of the game to replace Karim Benzema, he was the one who scored the winning goal after connecting with a long cross sent by Dani Carvajal from the right flank.

Real Madrid got a victory they required as the visiting squad, they can rest easy because they only have to play the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu and not lose the match in order to get that quarterfinals’ ticket.

This Real Madrid squad is completely recovered, we can now say that they are one of the top title contenders to win the Champions League again this season.
