Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus named Mesut Ozil as the best player he’s ever played alongside on a football pitch.
The 29-year-old has enjoyed an impressive career in the Bundesliga following spells at Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach.
Across his playing career, Reus has had the privilege of playing alongside some of the greatest talents in German football like Robert Lewandowski and Toni Kroos.
However, for Reus, the talent that sticks out for him in his mind through all these remarkable players is Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil.
The Dortmund captain played with Ozil for Germany at international level and, together, they helped Die Mannschaft qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
But Reus was heartbreakingly forced to withdraw from Germany’s 23-man squad due to an ankle problem. Therefore, manager Joachim Low moved Ozil into a left winger role for most of the competition.
And the then-Real Madrid player starred as Germany went on to win the 2014 World Cup, while Reus stayed at home and watched the events in Brazil unfold.
Nowadays, though, Ozil has retired from international duty for Germany and is struggling to gain favour under new Arsenal manager Unai Emery this season.
Despite Ozil’s struggles, however, he remains highly-rated by Reus nonetheless.
When asked to pick who’s the best he’s ever played with, Reus told Copa 90: “Mesut Ozil.
“The way he creates goals… he’s a player with a really good eye for his team-mates. He has so many assists in the Premier League and with the national team.
“He’s just an intelligent player and you can see that right away with a first glance. I always enjoyed playing with him and that’s why it’s a pity he’s taken a step back.
“I hope he’ll get back to form and return to playing regularly for Arsenal.”
Ozil has managed five goals and three assists in 26 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions this season.
