Marquinhos doesn’t understand what led team-mate Kylian Mbappe to drop such a big hint on leaving Paris Saint-Germain.
Amid reported interest from Real Madrid, Mbappe stunned the French football world last weekend by implying he could leave PSG for a “new project”.
Critics have been quick to point out the poor timing of Mbappe’s bombshell as it was the very same night he was voted Ligue 1’s Player of the Year.
PSG manager Thomas Tuchel later added to the fans’ growing fears by conceding that neither Mbappe or team-mate Neymar’s futures are guaranteed.
The 20-year-old striker returned to action on Friday night for PSG’s Ligue 1 finale against Stade Reims. He scored in the second half for his 33rd league goal of the campaign.
But even that wasn’t enough to prevent the Parisians from falling to a 3-1 defeat to Reims.
At the end of the match, Marquinhos pondered the meaning behind Mbappe’s mysterious hint when questioned about it by reporters.
“I didn’t really understand the message he wanted to get across,” said the Brazilian defender, via Yahoo.
“I think he talked about it with the [club’s] leaders and maybe the coach. He didn’t say anything about it to us.
“You have to ask him about the meaning of his sentence.
“We have important players; he’s one of the most important. He’s still young, but he’s strong in the mind and responsible for what he says and what he does on the field.
“The club matters first and foremost. It’s more important than all of the players. Whether we stay or go, the club will still be here.”
Mbappe finished the season with 39 goals and 17 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions for PSG.
The France international was awarded the Ligue 1 top-scorer award after the match at Reims. Although he lost out on the 2019 Golden Shoe award to Barcelona star Lionel Messi by three goals.
