Dimitri Payet believes that Marseille have to be considered the “underdogs” in their semi-final clash against Red Bull Salzburg in the Europa League, despite their 2-0 win in the first leg
The French midfielder provided two assists for teammates Florian Thauvin and Clinton N’Jie to seal a strong 2-0 win for Marseille at the Stade Velodrome on Thursday.
But Salzburg pulled off a remarkable comeback against Lazio in the previous knockout round, where they came from two goals down to eliminate their Serie A opponents.
Therefore, despite the strong advantage, Payet has chosen to remain cautious about his side’s prospects for the second leg at the Red Bull Arena in Austria next week.
“The perfect match does not exist but not to concede a goal is good, and to score two, it is even better,” the Marseille captain told W9 (via SportsKeeda).
“We are always underdogs, it does not change anything. We always played to win, so we will have to go there to win.”
The playmaker now leads the assists charts for the Europa League this season with six assists and has also been directly involved in seven of Marseille’s last 11 goals in Europe.
