Marseille needing to replace Florian Thauvin

Florian Thauvin is out of action due to an ankle injury which means that Olympique de Marseille have to quickly seek a solution.

It’s a big blow for Marseille since they would be without the services of Florian Thauvin until the winter break. The Frenchman has been absent since the start of the season due to a preseason injury.

Thauvin will now go under the knife on his ankle where the healing time will be at least three months.

Andre Villas-Boas will now have to do without the club’s best player in the past two seasons. It’s a huge blow for Les Phoceens who are already aching for creativity this term.

There are certain players who are free agents and might fill in for the France international while he recuperates.

Among free agents who are most suited to replace Florian Thauvin is Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman represented the Rhone giants between 2008 and 2011 and is a free agent. Even though he is 32, Ben Arfa’s ability cannot be questioned.

On his day, he is a world beater and is perhaps the most suitable player to replace Thauvin. However, it remains to be seen if Marseille would be willing to move heaven and earth to bring their former player to the Velodrome.

In addition to Ben Arfa, Paraguay international, Angel Romero is another player who could fill the void created by Thauvin’s injury.

Same is the case with Keisuke Honda who’s a free agent. However, the former Japan international is past his prime and might not be able to play week in week out so Boas would be looking at other profiles.

There are other lesser known players such as Goran Zakaric, Victor Andrade, Ben Youssef Fakhreddine, Yamil Assad and Andres Renteria who are free agents.

In all honesty, Marseille are desperate to find a solution and there aren’t many out there. Either the club will stay content with what it has or will look to bring in a free agent. However, with the club’s finances not in great shape, Adoni Zubizarreta will be looking for a bargain even if he does go for a free agent.

Hatem Ben Arfa might require the sort of salary that he was making at Stade Rennais and perhaps in order to get the job done, Les Phoceens may show some flexibility.

Ben Arfa on his part, might be eager to sign for Marseille if his Instagram post is anything to go by with.

“No challenge that has been proposed to me has excited me. It’s like a woman, if she does not excite you, you don’t bother,” he wrote on his Instagram account.

Jeremy Menez is another player who could offer a solution with the former Roma man already eager to return to France.

All in all, the options out there might not be many but Les Phoceens could end up signing a player who would perfectly replace Florian Thauvin as the Frenchman looks to recover in time before getting back to full fitness.
