Atlante United manager Gerardo Martino, publicly denied having any contact with the Argentina National team, he also confirmed zero problems with Leo Messi.
The Argentine National Team is currently without a manager as interim coach Lionel Scaloni took control of the squad for the two friendlies against Guatemala and Colombia, but there were recent reports of Gerardo Martino having contacts with AFA about the position. The Atlanta United manager finishes his contract with the MLS team in December and he has been naturally linked with the national team from his own country, which he managed right after the 2014 World Cup and reached the Copa America finals from 2015 and 2016 but lost against Chile. When he left the job, there were rumors from the local press that talked about a poor relationship with Lionel Messi and some other players from the squad. Until this Tuesday night, Martino hadn’t spoken about any contact from AFA and his alleged poor relationship with the players from the national team. We also can’t forget that Martino was signed by FC Barcelona before taking the job for Argentina with the goal of trying to get a coach who understood Messi, but the man wasn’t able to win a single trophy with the Catalan club after a single season.

Martino’s bad experience with Barcelona didn’t stop AFA from chasing him after the 2014 World Cup heartbreak, they believed the former Paraguay manager was experienced enough to take on the challenge. During his time with the National Team, Martino actually didn’t do a bad job as he reached those two Copa America finals we talked about, the problem with this squad is that Martino lacked the midfield creative players who could accompany Messi. The manager eventually left the national team and took the job at MLS club, Atlanta United where he has been for the last couple of years. At the American club he has built a competitive side that still hasn’t won a trophy but he has managed to become liked inside the MLS, there is no denying that Martino may have been waiting for rumors to start spreading about his next destination but he decided to toss them aside for now because he still has a contract with the MLS side. The Argentine manager has been linked not only with Argentina lately, but also with the Colombia National Team after Jose Pekerman stepped down from the job.

Martino was questioned by Radio Caracol from Colombia this Tuesday night and he confessed that it’s an honor being linked to the ‘Cafeteros’, but that’s as far as he went on that topic. When they asked him about Argentina, then ‘Tata’ did get a little more descriptive about the possibility and denied any contacts from AFA president Claudio Tapia: “I have spoken to no one from Argentina, plus there is a contract I’m still committed to solving with Atlanta. I won’t even try to solve this situation through the media but nobody has told me anything about what is going to happen yet. Claudio Tapia has been there during the toughest moments for Argentina, we got to live some very difficult situations and we never got support from any club from abroad. I deeply respect him because he never turned his back on anyone during those difficult times. My relationship with Messi is as normal as it can be, like any other relationship he has with every manager. I never had a single problem with Lío, with him or any other player from the Argentina National Team for that matter,” said Martino to Radio Caracol this Tuesday night.
