Italian-Argentine legend Humberto Maschio has watched both Pele and Maradona play but insists Lionel Messi is better than both legendary icons.
Some football questions can never be answered ‘correctly’. A perfect example is one asking the better player between Maradona and Pele was. Both were perfect in their own stride and it’s hard to point out a clear winner. It gets even more difficult if you put a certain Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the mix.
We’ve seen different opinions about who the greatest player of all time is but Humberto Maschio’s opinions should take some weight. The veteran legend is about one of the most respected figures in football right now.
During his playing days, Maschio played as a midfielder and scored 50 goals in 189 total appearances for four different Serie A sides.
At the age of 87, the Italian-Argentine was one of few graced to watch the likes of Pele, Di Stefano, Maradona and now Lionel Messi for Barcelona.
For all of the success Messi has with Barca, he has failed to do the same in national colors. Despite all of that, Maschio explains why the little magician is perhaps the best player to grace the sport.
“I saw Di Stefano, Pele, Maradona and Cruyff, but the best is Messi,” Maschio explained in an interview with Clarin.
“I saw all those greats and played against some of them, but for me Leo is the best of all.
“The speed of football at the time of those players was slowly, they were still geniuses and huge players in their own eras, but just analyse Messi’s goals, he doesn’t run much on the pitch but when he does he has the great ability to keep the ball stuck to his feet, it’s fantastic.”
Is Messi really the greatest of all time?
