Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich will open the 2019-20 campaign in German football, facing Borussia Dortmund in the DFL-Supercup on Saturday night.

Bayern Munich did not really have a season to remember, even though they won a domestic double in the 2018-19 campaign.

The Bavarians, however, did not demonstrate their best football and suffered an early elimination from the Champions League, losing 1-3 to Liverpool in the Round of 16.

In the Bundesliga, they managed to overturn a double-digit deficit behind Borussia Dortmund and win their seventh consecutive championship, two points ahead of the Black and Yellows.

Dortmund will participate in the annual Super Cup as runners-up from the previous season, as the Bavarians also won the German Cup defeating RB Leipzig 3-0 in the final.

Team news

Serge Gnabry who was named the Bayern Munich Player of the Season for 2018-19 is a doubt for the Bavarian’s season opener due to tight injury, while new signing Lucas Hernandez is declared not fit to face the Black and Yellows.

The other French defender who signed for Bayern Munich this summer, Benjamin Pavard is expected to make his debut for the German champions, with former Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski leading Nico Kovac’s attacking force on the other end of the field.

German central defender Mats Hummels, who rejoined Dortmund from Bayern Munich last June is ready to make his second debut for the Black and Yellows against his ex-teammates in the 2019 DFL-Supercup.

Julian Brandt will definitely miss the game through adductor strain, while the other addition to Borussia’s forward line Thorgan Hazard is doubtful with ankle problems.

Press conference

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke spoke about the DFB-Supercup, as the Black and Yellow will host the games against their bitter rivals.

“In the past, the stadium would be sold out in a one or two weeks,” said Watzke via dpa-international. “This time it was a couple of hours.”

“Through the title finale to the end of last season from both teams the game naturally has a different meaning again for many German football fans. The people are getting excited.”

Nico Kovac says he is happy with the shape of his players ahead of the Super Cup game against Dortmund.

“The team are in very good shape at the moment and we’ve got time before the start of the Bundesliga for fine-tuning,” he said via Bayern’s official website.

“They did well and that must give them a boost. It will be an interesting game [against Dortmund] and we want to win it.”

Form and Head-to-Head

Bayern Munich are the most successful team in the DFL-Supercup history, with seven wins in 12 appearances.

Borussia Dortmund, however, do not stand far behind, as they’ve won the trophy five times from nine outings.

Both sides met each other six times in the Super Cup so far, and share an equal head-to-head record with three wins and three defeats.

The Bavarians won the last two outings, defeating Dortmund on penalties the last time they faced each other – in 2017.

Only one game in the German Super Cup history has finished in a goalless draw, while Bayern and Dortmund played one against another in the highest-scoring game, with the Balck and Yellow noting a 4-3 victory back in 1989.

If Borussia Dortmund win on Saturday night, they’ll become only the fourth Bundesliga runner-up to lift the DFL-Supercup.
