Match preview: Cagliari vs Juventus

Serie A leaders Juventus visit Cagliari at the Sardegna Stadium on Tuesday night.

Cagliari are going into the game after two back-to-back wins against Fiorentina and Chievo respectively and three in the last four games.

Juventus sit comfortably in first place in Serie A with remarkable 15 points between them and second-placed Napoli. The Bianconeri are on their way to continue their domination in Italian football and win their eighth consecutive Serie A title.

They returned to the winning ways with a narrow 1-0 win over Empoli over the weekend, as 19-year old Moise Kean come off the bench to score the winner in the 72nd minute of the game.

Team news

Cagliari will miss midfielder Lucas Castro and defender Ragnar Klavan, as they are both out with long-term injuries to their knee and Achilles respectively.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains sidelined for the Old Lady, while forwards Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic did not travel with the squad as well.

Andrea Barzagli, Juan Cuadrado, Leonardo Spinazzola, Douglas Costa and Sami Khedira also missed the trip to Sardinia and will sit out Juventus’ away game against Cagliari on Tuesday night.

What did the managers say

Cagliari coach Rolando Maran says Juventus can win any game, even if they don’t play at their best level, as they showed against Empoli over the weekend.

“Everyone says Juventus did not have their best day on Saturday against Empoli, but they won anyway,” he said via Cagliari’s official website.

“They have the stability to get the result even in the less positive games. We must be strong, believe in ourselves, and play with courage and desire for victory.”

Massimiliano Allegri expects a difficult game for Juventus at the Sardegna Stadium. He also said Cristiano Ronaldo is working hard to get back and hopes to have him ready for the Champions League clash against Ajax.

“Tomorrow will be a difficult game, against a side that is strong at home. Cagliari will look to make a good impression and it will be an interesting match. Juventus always has the great quality to bring the best out of players. This is fundamental for the growth of youngsters,” he said via the Juventus official website.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is working to get back, we hope to have him ready for Ajax, but it will be difficult. Douglas Costa is in good condition and should be available for that game.

“Kean is well and Cagliari will be a good test for his growth. He is a 19-year-old boy with important qualities. Certainly, he needs to learn how to digest the highs and lows of football and continue to improve.”

Cagliari have won their last three home games, including a 2-1 victory over Inter one month ago.

Juventus have a remarkable record of 25 wins in 29 Serie A games to this point of the season. They’ve suffered their only defeat in their previous away game against Genoa 15 days ago.

The Bianconeri are unbeaten in the last 17 encounters with Cagliari, noting 14 victories and three draws.

Juventus have the best defensive record in Serie A, as they’ve conceded only 19 goals so far in the campaign.
