Joel Matip credited manager Jurgen Klopp as the “mastermind” behind Liverpool’s Champions League title and revealed everyone in Merseyside is experiencing “Kloppomania”.
After losing three finals in the past four years, Klopp’s long wait for silverware at Liverpool finally came to an end upon defeating Tottenham in last month’s Champions League final in Madrid.
Plaudits from across Europe have all been coming in for the German coach. In fact, Reds legend Jaime Carragher labelled Klopp as even more important than star centre-back Virgil van Dijk.
And Matip seemingly agrees with Carragher’s assessment by reflecting on the impact Klopp has made at Anfield.
“Everyone in Liverpool has worked very hard for this,” the Cameroon defender told Bild.
“But Klopp is the decisive factor. He has put the team together and led it to where it is now. No question: Klopp is the mastermind of this title.
“He is a ‘human catcher’ who conquered the whole city of Liverpool – or maybe even whole England – with his enthusiasm. The club, the city, the team, everyone is straight behind him, unconditionally.
“It’s something like Kloppomania here! Because he is how he is. Genuine and real – simply Kloppo.”
Although Matip’s importance for Liverpool this season cannot be ignored either. Klopp even started him in all but one of their Champions League knockout games. While he didn’t get on the scoresheet, it was the defender who assisted Divock Origi’s late goal to help the club to a 2-0 win over Spurs in the final itself.
“It is still hard to realise. It’s simply madness what our win has triggered,” said the 27-year-old.
“The whole city was dressed in red when we came back from Madrid. The pure joy, like an ecstasy. These pictures will always remain in my mind. An unbelievable experience.”
