An injury in the foot is expected to prevent defender Joel Matip from participating in the remainder of Liverpool’s campaign.

Liverpool defender Joel Matip picked up an untimely knock during the goalless draw against Everton on their first matchday after the return of the Premier League.

Matip was seen limping on the pitch and was hence replaced by Dejan Lovren at the 73-minute mark.

It was recently confirmed that the former Schalke man has hurt his foot. As a result, he will take no part in any of his side’s remaining seven league outings.

He told the official club website: “This season I will be not back on the pitch but for next season, I hope I’m going to be quite early a direct help for the team.”

Fitness issues have troubled Matip throughout this term, restricting his Premier League appearances to just nine games.
