Following a rather indifferent spell in England with Chelsea, Matteo Kovacic is reportedly set to make a shock return to Italy
It is clear that Matteo Kovacic is not in Zinedine Zidane’s plans at Real Madrid. The Croatian midfielder arrived in Spain from Internazionale a few years ago. However, things didn’t go to plan for the Croat and he was subsequently loaned to Chelsea.
With the Blues, the youngster experienced sort of a resurrection but that was not enough to convince Chelsea to buy him outright. Now the player has returned to his parent club as he awaits his next move.
And according to Calciomercato, Matteo Kovacic could make a return to Internazionale where he first rose to prominence. During his time in Italy, the Croatian midfielder was considered one of the hottest prospects in European football.
Things are definitely changing at the Giuseppe Meazza following the arrival of Antonio Conte. The former Juventus manager wants to turn things around for the Nerazzurri and sees Kovacic as an important part of the rebuilding process.
The club has already been linked with a move for Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku and now, Kovacic is another player who could arrive soon.
Inter are currently in negotiations with Real Madrid who have already deemed the Croat surplus to requirements.
The move, should it happen, is in stark contrast to Kovacic’s initial ambitions in England.
“I think it [a loan switch] was the most important thing I did for now in my career,” Kovacic said.
“It was a step I wanted a lot, I wanted to come here. I say thank you to my previous club, to Chelsea as well, who wanted me a lot. I am enjoying it and I like it a lot here.
“For now, I am happy here. The city is amazing, the club is one of the best in the world, and my team-mates are great.”
