Robert Lewandowski has been hailed as the best striker in the world but Lothar Matthaus believes he is the best player. Period.
Bayern Munich were thrashed by Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 in 2019/20 Bundesliga season. They changed managers midseason and were down to fourth place in the points table.
Hansi Flick came and changed their fortunes. However, one thing remained constant during their troubles and successes. Robert Lewandowski continued to score goals no matter the opposition or manager in the dugout.
Bayern takes on the challenge of Chelsea in the Champions League. Ahead of the fixture, Lothar Matthaus shared his view on the encounter where Munich already command a 3-0 lead.
He singled out Kimmich for his maturity and like every Bayern fan, is in awe of the Polish forward and believes he is in a league of his own.
“Motivation and greed are automatically there for every player in this phase of the Champions League,” Matthaus said in his interview with Abendzeitung.
“You shouldn’t put yourself under too much pressure, you have to approach the task with serenity and looseness. And that’s what sets these boys apart.”
“[Joshua] Kimmich, for example, is very ambitious, but he plays as calmly as a 30-year-old experienced dog.”
“And you don’t need me to say anything more about Lewandowski, he has put in fantastic performances. For me he’s not just the best striker in the world right now, he’s the best player.”
