Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus is confident of the German side’s victory in the upcoming UEFA Champions League showdown against Barcelona.
Bayern Munich eased past Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16, overwhelming the Premier League giants 7-1 on aggregate scoreline to reach the quarter-finals.
It means the ‘Bavarians’ have now won all eight of their European fixtures this season.
What’s more, Hansi Flick’s men have netted 31 goals in the process, as they boast the competition’s best scoring record this year.
All but one of Bayern’s continental successes this season have yielded a full-time margin of at least two goals, which says enough about the quality Robert Lewandowski and his teammates have been able to produce in each of their European outings.
Perennial Bundesliga champions are now set to take on Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final encounter on Friday.
Speaking of Bayern’s chances of breaking into the semi-finals, Lothar Matthaus has no doubts who’s the favorite in this clash of titans.
“Of course Barcelona have the quality to be at their best in a game,” he said, as relayed by the Spanish publication Marca.
“But I think Bayern would have to make a lot of mistakes and do a lot of things badly to lose to this Barcelona.
“But, in a one-off game, things can happen.
“You do something bad, and you’re out.
“You can correct these things in two-legged ties.”
Barcelona outscored Napoli 3-1 at Camp Nou on Saturday night to prevail in their two-legged tie after the first leg ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
It’s, however, safe to say this Barca side is miles away from the one that thrashed Juventus in the 2014/15 final.
Also, facing Bayern may stir a painful memory. Led by Jupp Heynckes, the German heavyweights utterly humiliated the Catalans 7-0 on aggregate, back in the 2012/13 semi-finals.
