American footballer Megan Rapinoe has won the women’s Ballon d’Or edition ahead of Lucy Bronze and Alex Morgan.
Megan Rapinoe becomes only the second woman in history to win the Ballon d’Or after leading the United States to the World Cup last summer.
The 34-year-old saw off fierce competition from England duo Lucy Bronze and Ellen White along with Australia’s Sam Kerr and Dutch star Vivianne Miedema. Her USA team-mates Rose Lavelle, Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath were also in contention.
But Rapinoe deservedly came out on top to cap off a dream year. Not only did she win the World Cup, but the winger also won the competition’s Golden Boot and FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year in September.
Norwegian Ada Hegerberg was the first woman to win the Ballon d’Or in history last year.
