Real Sociedad are close to signing Mikel Merino from Newcastle United, according to Sky Sports.
It is believed that Spanish club are willing to activate the £10million release clause in his contract which could see him leave St. James Park to join Sociedad.
Merino joined Newcastle United from Borussia Dortmund on loan last summer but his impressive performances led to the hierarchy at English club making the move a permanent one during the January transfer window.
He signed a five-year deal when he joined the club permanently with a release clause of £10million included in the deal but Real Sociedad appear set to take advantage of that release clause.
Rafael Benitez’s side completed the signing of South Korean midfielder and captain Ki-Sung Yeung on a free but the club are hopeful the former Swansea player won’t be a replacement for Merino.
Newcastle have also made the loan signing of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka a permanent one after he has impressed between the goal posts for the Tyneside. The club are also rumoured to be interested in the signature of French forward, Alassane Plea from Nice.
