Lionel Messi adds the FIFA Best award to his collection after beating off Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo.
While it was no real surprise that he beat Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese superstar had a difficult first season in Serie A with Juventus.
It was a shock to many that he beat Liverpool’s man-mountain of a defender Virgil van Dijk.

There is no doubt, that Messi’s career to date has been a revelation. The awards he has won and the records he has achieved are second to none.
Last season saw him collect a La Liga winners medal, the tenth of his career. He won the European golden boot award, for his 36 league goals.
However, outside of the domestic campaign, he and his Barcelona team fell short compared to many other European giants.
However, if the old cliche that goals win games, and game-winners win the awards, then there is o doubt Messi was the only candidate.
In the 2018/19 season, Messi played 50 games and managed to score 51 goals. His team contribution is not bad either, with 22 assists too.
Only once before has a defender won the World Player of the year, and that was Fabio Cannavaro back in 2006.
The odds were always against Van Dijk irrespective of his colossal impact on Liverpool’s Champions League victory.
The night was once again Messis. This was in fact his sixth world player of the year award.
Congratulations Lionel Messi, 2019 FIFA Best men’s footballer award.
