Messi is certain that the 2-0 win over Qatar is going to help the national team turn a new page as the Albiceleste looks for consistency in the knockout phases.
Lionel Messi has said that Argentina needs more wins like the one they secured against Qatar in order to gain confidence. The talented forward was speaking to media following a much-needed 2-0 win over Asian champions Qatar in the final group game of the 2019 Copa America.
Argentina headed into this encounter on the back of some really poor displays against the likes of Colombia and Paraguay. Albiceleste lost the first game 2-0 to Colombia and were then held to a forgettable draw by Paraguay.
A lot has been said about Lionel Scaloni’s men’s performance in Brazil this summer. However, Messi feels that the heard earned win over Qatar is going to be very helpful. Lautaro Martinez and Sergio Aguero scored one goal each for Argentina.
And as reported by Daily Mail, Messi discussed the value of the win for the national team. He said that following the win, the whole competition is going to look different for the team.
‘We had a good match and we won, which was the most important.
‘We needed a game like this, to gain confidence and be calm. As the games go by, the team has to grow and this match served that purpose.’
He added: ‘Now starts another Copa. Now starts all or nothing.’
Messi also had a chance to score another goal for his side but the Barcelona man put the ball over the crossbar from close range.
Now that they’ve put the sorry performances in the opening two games behind them, Messi and co would be looking to far well in the quarterfinal against Venezuela on Friday. Colombia topped the group Argentina were in following a 1-0 win over Paraguay.
