Lionel Messi was eagerly looking forward to playing in the Copa America and was extremely disappointed to learn about its postponement.
On March 17, Copa America joined the Olympics, European Championship, and Club World Cup among the major sporting competitions to get canceled owing to the coronavirus outbreak.
The 47th edition of Copa America, which was to be hosted in Colombia and Argentina, was pushed back 12 months.
Having finished second on three previous editions of the competition, Lionel Messi had hoped that playing in his homeland will give him the much-needed edge to finally guide his national side to glory.
The FC Barcelona forward, naturally, was frustrated after hearing that the South American competition was canceled. However, he insists it was the right thing to do.
“Delaying the Copa America was a huge disappointment,” said Messi, in an interview with Adidas. “But it was certainly normal and logical.
“The Cup was going to be a great event for me this year and I was looking forward to playing it again.
“It was hard when I found out about the postponement, but I understood it perfectly.”
