Hugo Gatti believes Lionel Messi must escape his comfort zone at Barcelona by joining arch-rivals Real Madrid to prove he’s the best ever.
Messi has literally achieved nearly everything possible during his fabled career with Barcelona after helping them beat Real Madrid to 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and six Copas del Reys in Spain.
The 32-year-old has also won record-equalling five Ballon d’Ors with his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo on route to an incredible career haul of 678 goals for Barcelona and Argentina.
Many pundits and fans alike, in fact, are tipping him to win the Ballon d’Or for the sixth time in December.
But, for some like Gatti though, Messi just doesn’t make the final cut when it comes to earning a rank alongside Ronaldo, Diego Maradona and Pele.
The former Boca Juniors goalkeeper thinks never playing for another club has damaged his fellow Argentine’s legacy. Furthermore, he pinpointed Messi’s lack of success on the international stage as another problem.
“It seems as if I am anti-Argentine, but until Messi performs in the big games, he will continue to be a player of home games,” Gatti told El Chiringuito de Jugones.
“He has to have balls to go to Real Madrid and prove everything there like Cristiano [Ronaldo did]. Otherwise, he will be just one more [player].
“Cristiano went to the best club in the world. Messi plays at home, on his pitch with everything [that comes with that in terms of home comforts].
“Let him perform in the Champions League and the World Cup, otherwise he will always be one more [player]. When he performs there, he will fight with [Johan] Cruyff, Maradona and Pele.
“Messi performs when they let him perform. It’s very easy to perform with everything in your favour at home.”
