We tell you the main reason why we believe that Lionel Messi needs to win the Copa America in order to stay in the conversation vs Ronaldo.

We don’t care how much you like Lionel Messi or how naturally talented he is, not winning anything with Argentina is setting him back vs Ronaldo.

The Argentine player has won almost as many trophies as the Portuguese forward on a personal level.

But Cristiano surpassed Messi in some areas that are essential in order to consider him the best in football history.

We know that Messi could be the most gifted players who ever lived (sorry Pele), but Cristiano Ronaldo is determined to finish his career above every other player in all the historical statistics.

In regards to goals, Ronaldo is still above Messi with club and country.

Trophy-wise, Cristiano has one more Champions League title than Leo but the Argentine has many more league titles than the Portuguese star.

However, Ronaldo has won in the three biggest leagues that exist.

We will never know if Messi is capable of winning leagues in other countries because he will never play in another club that isn’t FC Barcelona, this doesn’t look good for the Argentine.

Moving on to the individual accolades, both have five Ballon d’Or trophies but Messi could win his sixth this year if he wins the Copa America.

Copa America will decide who is the absolute best.

The Copa America this summer is what it all comes down to, Messi has the biggest and maybe only opportunity to stay above Ronaldo for good.

Winning the Copa America could equal what Cristiano has done with Portugal, which has been quite incredible on the collective level.

However, the Juventus player wasn’t important in any of the finals that his country played and the credit goes to his teammates (Eder and Guedes) for the victory.

Jamie Carragher sums this debate up perfectly:  “We keep getting involved in this Messi vs Ronaldo debate, where will they finish at the end of their careers in terms of Pele, Maradona, all these people,” said Jamie via The Express.

“What I would say is, I think that fella [Ronaldo] is going to keep playing until he’s scored more goals than anyone.”

“I think he will go down, certainly in my eyes, as the greatest goalscorer I’ve ever seen.”

“When you think he came onto the scene as a tricky left winger, the goalscoring record, what he’s shown again in mid-week. That’s what I think he has.”

“I think Messi is the better player but for me, [Ronaldo is] the best goalscorer I’ve ever seen.”

Ronaldo has the longevity factor in his favor.

We don’t know if Messi will keep playing for a long time at the same level, the star already confessed that he doesn’t even know.

Winning the Copa America would mean that he would take a huge load off his shoulders and that could encourage him to begin his retirement.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, is a competitive animal who clearly intends to keep playing until he is 40 years old.

There is no scenario in which Cristiano will finish his career below Messi in every single aspect if the Argentine retires in a couple of years and Ronaldo just keeps going.

The only chance that Messi has to keep competing at this level is if he doesn’t win the Copa America this summer and he tries one last time to make it to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

All we can tell you is that there is nothing we would love more than to see both of these players performing at the highest level until they become grandparents.

We will never see another rivalry quite like this one in any sport, which is why we have to do everything in our power to delay its ending as much as we physically can.
