Lionel Messi broke Xavi Hernandez’ record of most assists in a single La Liga season in the match against Deportivo Alaves.
Lionel Messi, as he so often does, ran the show during FC Barcelona’s closing match of the 2019/20 La Liga season.
Messi set up one goal and scored two of his own as Barca hammered Deportivo Alaves 5-0.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner registered his 21st assist in the league this term, breaking his former teammate Xavi Hernandez’s assist record set in the 2008/09 season.
He also scored his 24th and 25th league goal in the match to increase the gap against Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, the next-best scorer. Unless Benzema finds the back of the net at least 5 times against Leganes, he would win his seventh Pichichi Trophy.
Speaking after the match, the 33-year old insisted that he isn’t motivated by personal laurels and was satisfied to see his team’s perform well.
“Today, we took a step forward in attitude and commitment. Today, we saw something else,” Messi told, as Marca reports.
“It was a difficult game to play because of the situation we were in, the time and the heat. The team responded in a different way in attitude and commitment.
“Awards and individual objectives are secondary. I’d have liked it to have come with the La Liga title.”
