Former Real Madrid forward Predrag Mijatovic feels that Luka Modric is the strong favourite for this year’s Ballon d’Or
Football’s most highly-coveted individual award has been exclusively won by either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo for the past decade.
But Mijatovic reckons that Modric will put an end to that following his standout campaign for both Croatia and Real.
The 33-year-old has already beaten the duo to a host of individual accolades this year with the latest one being the Goal 50 award.
“There is only one candidate for the [Ballon d’Or]: Luka Modric,” Mijatovic told Cadena SER.
“I think he will win as he won the Player of the World Cup, the Champions League and FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award.
“We’ll see what happens, but I think Luka has the greatest possibility of winning.”
The 49-year-old also gave his views on Marco Asensio’s bigger role at Real this season.
“[Asensio] has a lot of talent and progression, he has highs and lows, cracking matches and others where he does not see the ball too much,” said Mijatovic.
“He has to take on this weight and trust in himself, depending on his team-mates and the results, he can offer a lot more than what he is offering.
“But, he has to convince himself, he does not trust himself too much, he has to keep training.”
Real will take a trip to Eibar this Saturday in a Liga game.
