AC Milan legend and director Paulo Maldini says the club believes in the Marco Giampaolo project.
The Rossoneri have had an indifferent start to the 2019/20 season. They sit 6th in the league, having played five, of which they have won three and lost two.
The most recent defeat coming at the hands of crosstown rivals Inter Milan in the Debry Della Madonnina.
Maldini spoke to Sky Sports Italia about the current situation at Milan and their new manager.
He is obviously concerned about results, but more importantly the quality of football. which has been poor, to say the least.
“The derby was disappointing in terms of result, but also the performance, obviously.”
“We had the opportunity to reach the top of the table by beating Inter.”
“But lost when playing a quality of football that was below not just our expectations, but also those of the Coach.”
The former club captain is not suggesting that there is a problem, but that the coach needs time to execute a very specific plan and style of play.
“It is an important test against a side that is basically in our same situation. We mustn’t let ourselves get hasty or impatient.”
“We chose a Coach who wants to play a very specific style of football and we always knew that would take time, so we have absolute faith in him.”
They knew what they were getting when they chose to hire Giampaolo and are confident in their decision.
“We are well aware of the type of Coach we hired, we discussed all this before signing the contract. This is an ambitious club and we continue to believe he is the right Coach.”
Maldini has seen this kind of start to a managerial career in Milan before, with the Italian legend Arrigo Sacchi.
He is confident that given time Giampaolo can produce the same kind of results.
“I remember we went through these same issues with Sacchi.”
“He too had very precise ideas, not much happened in the first couple of months, but then once the results started rolling in, everyone realised it was the right approach.”
Sacchi’s time at Milan was part of their golden era, and a return to that level of dominance in the footballing world would see Giampaolo elevated to the status of legend.
It will not be an overnight project, and Milan do not have a reputation for being patient.
The next few results will be crucial to Marco Giampaolo’s chances of surviving.
