Legendary defender Franco Baresi has named his pick for the world’s best defenders.
Franco Baresi wasn’t the most athletic or demanding defender in history, but he will forever go down as one of Italy and AC Milan’s greatest.
He excelled as a sweeper and had that unique tactical understanding of the game, which allowed him to become a better both defensively and offensively.
One of the four-time Champions League winner’s greatest achievements in football had to be the 1994 World Cup. He miraculously recovered from a big knee injury in the group-stages to make the final against Brazil, where he silenced Romario expertly before Italy lost on penalties.
Nonetheless, Baresi’s impact was so great that Milan retired his No.6 jersey after his playing career ended in 1997.
And now the Rossoneri icon has earmarked Sergio Ramos and Virgil van Dijk as the best defenders of this current era, citing the Real Madrid captain’s trophy haul and the Liverpool star’s ability to improve his team as the key factors.
“Thinking about the defenders it is not easy to choose one.” Baresi told Goal.
“I believe that, over the last few years, Sergio Ramos is one of the top players for his trophy cabinet and for his extraordinary career. he is still so important for Real Madrid even if he is no longer young.
“Then Van Dijk, who, for Liverpool, is a very important figure for his ability, for his personality, for what he managed to convey to the team and to give confidence by winning after so many years.”
