Pundit Josep Maria Minguella warned Barcelona that Antoine Griezmann is nothing but trouble and gave them TWO reasons why they should pass on signing him.
French forward Griezmann broke the news on Tuesday that he will be ending his five-year stay at Atletico Madrid this summer.
It comes just under 12 months after he controversially turned down a move to Barcelona through a bizarre documentary in favour of signing a new contract at Atletico until June 2023.
Following the club’s Champions League last-16 defeat to Juventus in March, however, Griezmann has been linked with a move to Barcelona once again.
But Minguella, who ran for the presidency at Barcelona in 2003, reckons the Catalan club would be ill-advised to pursue Griezmann due to his bad behaviour and doubts on how he will fit into the system.
“I wouldn’t sign Griezmann for two reasons,” said Minguella, according to Marca.
“Firstly, he has teased his club, agreed to move to Barcelona and, when the moment to sign arrives, he backtracks, shoots a video and leaves the [Barcelona] president and whoever was involved in agreeing on the deal with egg on their faces.
“Then he returns to his original club and puts pressure on Atletico to improve his contract significantly.
“It is a great prejudice, not only for the [contract] increase, but for his teammates. After not shining in the past season there, he’s now said that he’s leaving and making use of the [release] clause.
“Then he negotiates with Barcelona or another team. This guy wouldn’t get in my Barcelona because of his behaviour.
“Secondly, he’s an excellent player when he’s playing behind [Olivier] Giroud or [Diego] Costa, where he has more space.
“Leo Messi plays in this position at Barcelona and bringing in a similar player at a great cost to put him in a position that he isn’t used to is a lesson that Barcelona must’ve learned from [Philippe] Coutinho.”
Minguella also reckons Barcelona would be better off pursuing younger players rather than a 28-year-old Griezmann.
“In the end, we’re going to have a team that is weary and old,” he said. “I’m not going against Barcelona, I’m going against those that are harming them.”
Griezmann has managed 21 goals and 10 assists in 47 appearances for Atletico this season.
The France international will take part in his final La Liga game for Atletico at Levante on Saturday. Diego Simeone’s side will then play Beitar Jerusalem in Israel three days later in a friendly.
