Mo Salah was left to rue chances missed as Egypt crashed out of the African Cup of Nations following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of South Africa.
Salah and Egypt are out of the African Cup of Nations after the Pharoahs suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat at the hands of South Africa. The Egyptians were favourites coming into the clash and had the right momentum behind them.
However, Thembinkosi scored in the 85th minute for the South Africans. Salah was completely distraught following the defeat which also resulted in the sacking of manager Javier Aguirre. Egypt Football Association president, Hany Abo Rida has also resigned after the shocking loss.
It was definitely a shocking moment for Salah who had only recently helped Liverpool to a Champions League triumph at the expense of Tottenham. In blazing form throughout last campaign, Salah also scored twice for his nation on its way to the knockout phase of the competition.
Now that the African campaign has ended, the Liverpool forward will head for holiday and will be looking to use that time to reflect what could have been.
Salah is expected to return to Anfield for preseason. The team is set to play friendly matches against the likes of Tranmere Rovers, Bradford City, Borussia Dortmund, Seville, Sporting, Napoli and Olympique Lyonnais.
On August 4, they will play Manchester City in the Community Shielf final.
Due to Egypt’s defeat, Salah is expected to be ready for the friendly game against Lyon which takes place in Geneva on July 31.
Regardless, one has to feel sorry for the Egyptian national team following a morale jarring defeat. Heading into the competition, they were touted as one of the favourites to lift the trophy. However, it appears that South Africa are emerging as the competition’s dark horses.
