Luka Modric is seeing a fall from grace after winning the Ballon d’Or for his efforts in the 2017/18 season, where he led Real Madrid to the Champions League.
This season, however, the story is a bit different for Modric.
The Croatian midfielder struggled with injuries since the beginning of 2016/17. This is partially due to his insistence to play for the Croatian national team at all times.
However, while he was forcing himself on international duty, Federico Valverde took over, placing himself as a surefire starter.

Modric showed he still has it, playing a big role in the recent Leganes thrashing.
The club is worried about his constant international duty travels, which is an issue considering his 34 years of age.
Even though it looked like Zidane cannot do without Pogba, he found a way to make it work with Modric and Valverde hungry to fight for their spot.
As a result, James Rodriguez was dropped a lot since the Madrileno where Valverde took his spot.
No matter what happens next, it’s safe to say that failure to secure Pogba might be a blessing in disguise for Real Madrid.
